General Information about the ESL classes at Daniels Middle School:
Students in ESL will learn to read, to write, to speak, and to listen to the English language. Our primary text is the Inside textbook.
Reading: Our focus is on 21st Century Skills, and as such our focus is on Non-Fiction. We will study informational texts including biographies, science articles, and social studies articles. We will also examine some fiction including short stories and, for ESL II, novellas. A variety of reading strategies will be taught and practiced throughout the year.
Writing: A major focus of our class is writing and the writing process. We will write a variety of texts, including journals, reading logs, and personal narratives. Students will also be writing stories for our class paper, The Daniels Globe.
Speaking and listening: We will practice phonemic awareness, phonics, and decoding skills.
Grammar: We will study a variety of topics including: pronouns; present tense verbs; action verbs; negative sentences; Yes-or-No questions; regular Past Tense Verbs, There is – and – There are statements; Contractions; Plural Nouns; Helping Verbs; Capitalization Rules; Possessive Nouns; Infinitives.
